Due to the springs that rise from the center of the city, the water temperature in San Marcos is a constant 72 degrees Fahrenheit even in January, providing opportunities for river recreation all year long.

Canoe SMTX services the first 16 miles of the San Marcos River from City Park to Staples Dam and some sections of the Blanco River.
